Big names have taken the stage in the dark wood paneled club: Art Blakey, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, Chet Baker, Diana Krall, Eddie Harris, James Moody, Joe Henderson, Johnny Griffin, Monty Alexander, Ray Brown, Rebekka Bakken , Tommy Flanagan, Viktoria Tolstoy and countless other greats of the jazz scene. Many of these exceptional artists have written jazz history - and also immortalized themselves in BIRDLAND on their original portrait of Heidi Reichert or on the walls with their autographs.
After more than 28 years of BIRDLAND and more than 4,700 concerts, the founding couple Heidi and Dieter Reichert decided in June 2013 to retire from music. The scene thus lost one of its most important meeting points for music and jazz culture.
A reason for us to bring this institution back to its original place in the Hamburg music landscape. Since October 2nd, 2014 the BIRDLAND is back!
We're proud to have given Hamburg its legendary jazz club back.
We, on the one hand, is Wolff Reichert, one of the sons of the founders: "Through my parents I came into contact with jazz very early and then grew up in BIRDLAND, so to speak, where I gradually took over the booking. I have in common with Julius that after studying music I was able to turn my passion into a profession and work as a drummer.”
We, on the other hand, is Julius Horn: "As an enthusiastic restaurateur and operator of the live music bar FREUNDLICH+KOMPETENT, I have not only taken over the management of the bar team in the new BIRDLAND, but also present my own musicians and - this is new - away from jazz . With over 14 years of bar experience and many years as a concert and festival organizer behind me, I decide on the basis of gut feeling who fits in well.”
Nicolle Reichert - Wolff's wife - has also been part of the operator team since 2019: "I would like to continue what my parents-in-law started over 35 years ago, and with the same passion, dedication and a lot of heart. At Birdland I am responsible for press work, marketing and our social media channels.
In addition to jazz, BIRDLAND should appeal to a music-loving audience that simply wants to spend a nice evening with us and lets everyday life be a little everyday.
