Sepultura - Paulo Xisto's Bar in Amsterdam - BR020

"Bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr of world famous Brazilian metal band Sepultura has opened a bar in Amsterdam called BR020 (BR for Brazil and 020 for Amsterdam’s landline city code).
According to his bar staff, Paulo had always wanted to own a bar in Amsterdam even though he doesn’t live there. The bar staff play vinyl records, so you can ask to hear something and even pick from the wall. My party went for some Motörhead, AC/DC and Pink Floyd.
Sepultura is finishing off a tour next week and the entire band is scheduled to attend the private opening of the bar although BR020 has been open for business since January. They serve one type of beer as their regular beer, a lesser known choice in Amsterdam purely because another beer from the same distributor is the beer the band has on their rider: Czech beer Pilsner Urquell.

If you know anything about the Dutch city of Amsterdam, you’ll know it’s famous for canal’s, coffee shops, the red light district, and weed. Well, that’s probably the stereotypical view many have come to envision in their minds, however, Amsterdam has so much to offer for the average tourist it can actually be quite overwhelming to take in.
Amsterdam is home to the famous Anne Frank house, Van Gogh Museum, and vibrant flower markets. The first thing we were greeted by in this great city was the architecture. Incredibly high, almost gothic style buildings in parts made you feel quite insignificant, but also in awe of your surroundings. It’s always satisfying to feel lost in your environment unknowing of what you may be about to discover beyond the next corner.
After obligatory searching for the nearest power points in our hotel rooms to charge our phones, we decided to search for local bars in the area, and live music, on the off chance we might get to experience how the Dutch headbang. We were not disappointed in the slightest. Within a few minutes we’d set our sites on at least 5 different bars we wanted to check out, and two nights of live music.
One of the most intriguing though was BR020. BR020 was actually opened by Paulo Xisto. Bass player from legendary Brazilian metal band Sepultura. The name was confusing at first but we then discovered that it was pretty simple. BR stood for Brazil, and 020 was part of the zip code for the location of the bar. Simple, but effective.
We really didn’t know what to expect. From checking out photos on social media, it seemed like quite a small bar with not a hint of metal in sight. How wrong we were. Upon entering the rustic looking hipster joint, we were met with an entire wall full of original vinyl pressings of some of the biggest metal bands and albums on the planet. Not only could you hypnotically fixate your eyes on the glorious covers of these records, but you could also request to have any one of them played!
The bar also features wall hangings of a very unique kind. Bass guitars, which we have to assume belong to the man himself, Paulo Xisto. Cymbals also litter the venue walls, and one wall is made entirely of old PA speakers. BR020 has managed to seamlessly integrate the modern feel of an authentic independent cafe that serves killer beer and tasty food, with the mystic of Metal music. You’re very aware that you’re sat in a seemingly “normal looking” cafe that is owned by a musical legend.
The vinyl wall gets changed every single month with a fresh batch of new albums for people to request as they drink and dine their night away. It’s also quite strange to see such a mix of people from office workers that are grabbing a beer after work, and metalheads covered in tattoos stamping their feet to Anthrax, but it works really well.
BR020 was without a doubt one of the most unique experiences we’ve encountered on our travels around Europe. Where else can you listen to an original pressing of Anthrax - Among The Living, devour a tasty vegan burger, and enjoy some super delicious beer whilst being surrounded by Bass guitars owned by Sepultura? Don’t worry, they serve “normal” food as well.

""The Troubadour was founded in 1954 by Michael and Sheila van Bloemen; making it one of London's oldest independent music venues. Originally opening its doors as a coffee house: intended as a cultural meeting place for artists and mavericks alike, the Troubadour quickly became accredited as a West London institution; beckoning artists, poets, writers, musicians and advocates from all over the world, and was a cornerstone venue in the British folk revival. After an inspired visit to the Troubadour in it's early years, a young Doug Weston would ret n to West Hollywood from his trip to England and open his own Troubadour in 1957 - which would see its own role of importance in the Laurel Canyon scene and subsequently the American pop-culture of the 60's and 70's. Like us, the Troubadour West Hollywood would go on to influence the rest of the world. It played a formidable role in the launching of the careers of: Jackson Brown, Neil Diamond, Elton John, the Eagles, the Byrds, Carole King, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and Tom Waits.

In the rising sun of a new decade: the 1960's brought about great change in the London political and social scene. And as Chelsea's King's Road was leading in pop-culture and the Mod movement, British Jazz was also rising in popularity once again, and the Troubadour became a regular gig and hangout for London's finest Jazz musicians; most notable of players being Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones, who played in 1961 - where he was "found" by Alexis Andrew Nicholas Koerner and was quickly recruited to join Blues Incorporated. Along with Mr. Watts, other greats of the British Jazz scene such as: Lionel Grigson, Michael "Spike" Wells, Mick Pyne, Dave Gelly MBE, Daryl Runswick and David "Happy" Williams all took the stage throughout the 1960's.

In December of 1962, a young Bob Dylan made his maiden trip to London after being invited by Philip Saville to appear in Madhouse on Castle Street, a drama Saville was directing for the BBC. Before departing for London, Dylan's mentor, Pete Seeger gave him the instruction to seek out Anthea Joseph who organised many of the folk events at the club and was often credited as "the Manager" of the venue. The Troubadour was the first venue Bob Dylan ever performed in while in the United Kingdom and he did so under the pseudonym Blind Boy Grunt. Here he would meet fellow folk legend, Martin Carthy who taught him the traditional English ballad, Scarborough Fair. Dylan would later go on to write his own song Girl from the North Country inspired by the English balladeer's rendition of the folk classic.
Jimi Hendrix would perform at the Troubadour in the late sixties, after having moving to London to find popular success after he signed to ex-Animals bassist-turned-manager, Chase Chandler. Hendrix was introduced to Chandler in New York by Linda Keith - who was dating Keith Richards at the time - and together convinced Hendrix to move to England.
The 1970's would see the decline of the British Blues Invasion and the psychedelic sixties sound: enter the birth of the blues powered hard rock and heavy metal. One of the most famous bands to come out of this era was Led Zeppelin who, after sell-out shows at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, would come back to the Troubadour and jam late into the evening and early morning.
And in more recent years, keeping with tradition, the Troubadour has had the privilege of seeing new, fresh faces, such as Adele, Ed Sheeran, Morrissey and Paolo Nutini come through on their way to topping the worldwide pop charts.

"Ex-IRON MAIDEN Singer PAUL DI'ANNO Dead At 66
On behalf of his family, Conquest Music has confirmed the death of Paul Andrews, professionally known as Paul Di'Anno.
Paul passed away at his home in Salisbury at the age of 66.
Born in Chingford, East London on May 17, 1958, Paul first came to prominence as lead singer of English heavy metal band IRON MAIDEN between 1978 and 1981. He sang on their groundbreaking debut album "Iron Maiden" and the influential follow-up release, "Killers". Since leaving IRON MAIDEN, Paul Di'Anno had a long and eventful recording career with BATTLEZONE and KILLERS as well as numerous solo releases and guest appearances.
Despite being troubled by severe health issues in recent years that restricted him to performing in a wheelchair, Paul continued to entertain his fans around the world, racking up well over 100 shows since 2023. His first career retrospective album, "The Book Of The Beast", was released in September 2024 and featured highlights of his recordings since leaving IRON MAIDEN.
In December 2022, Di'Anno spent time in Split, Croatia recording an album with his new project called WARHORSE. The band was formed earlier that year by Di'Anno and two guitarists/authors, Hrvoje Madiraca and Ante "Pupi" Pupačić. The resulting LP was made available in July 2024 under the PAUL DI'ANNO'S WARHORSE banner.
Less than two months ago, Di'Anno, who had been performing in a wheelchair as a result of serious health problems for most of the past decade, discussed the progress of his treatment, two years after he underwent major knee surgery in Croatia. He told SDTV - Stonedead Festival: "It's improving a hell of a lot. The only problem is, and I'm sad to say, with my own country, it's a piece of shit over here [in the United Kingdom] for the NHS [National Health Service, a comprehensive public-health service under government administration]. It's broken completely. I go away, I get — with the lymphedema [a chronic condition that causes swelling in the body's tissues due to a compromised lymphatic system] thing I've got here, it's like it's all full of fluid. Two hours with a medical staff over in Croatia, it's gone down. Come over here [back to the U.K.], they don't even do that, lymphatic drainage [a gentle massage that targets the lymphatic system, which resides just beneath the skin]. Or they wrap you up in bandages. We just took them all off yesterday and put compression stockings on them. And they won't even put that on unless you go through all these channels. Fuckin' England, you're finished, mate."
Paul also reflected on his recent meeting with the singer who replaced him in IRON MAIDEN, Bruce Dickinson, in Croatia. Bruce, who was promoting his new solo album, "The Mandrake Project", performed with his solo band on July 13 at Hala Zagreb in Zagreb, where Di'Anno had been receiving treatment after undergoing his knee surgery.
Paul said: "[Our conversation was] private, so I say no more. Everyone thinks that we hated each other, which is bullshit. That's the press for you. But we've known each other, obviously, from when he was in SAMSON and all that. So, yeah, it's all good."
Di'Anno also discussed his meeting with Dickinson during a recent appearance on "The Neil Jones Rock Show" on TotalRock. He said: "Well, I can't tell you too much. I came out of the clinic I was in, 'cause I was going on stage that night, in Zagreb as well, doing signings basically, and I was gonna go up and do three songs with a MAIDEN covers band sort of thing. All I remember is my transport came to pick me up from the clinic. I'm, like, 'Where are we going?' So I went down to this open-air concert thing. And Bruce was on stage. I was like, oh, I'm clueless. That was my initial thought. Anyway, so after it was all over, I went backstage. All of Bruce's band came down to say hello and all that stuff. They said, 'We're gonna come down and watch you later on, in about an hour or two.' And then next thing I know, Bruce came in. We just gave each other a hug, shook hands and had a little chat, which is private, obviously. But, yeah, it's all good. But the press have put the bad things up about us, that we don't like each other, et cetera, et cetera. But, yeah, it's all good. He's had a little snipe at me over the years, and I'd snipe back occasionally, but yeah, it just kept it all interesting. Yeah, he's a great singer, man. Absolutely brilliant."
Pressed about whether it's true that he wasn't properly compensated for his work on the first two IRON MAIDEN albums, Paul said: "I have nothing to comment on that at all, because, to be honest with you, it's nobody's damn business. I got paid very well. I'm very happy with that. See, if I try to say, 'Oh, IRON MAIDEN didn't pay me enough money,' it's a bad reflection on IRON MAIDEN. And I'm not taking that. "In the former Winterhude bar "Freundlich + Kompetent" on the ground floor of the Mundsburg Center, club events, concerts, bingo and quiz evenings are held regularly in addition to the bar business.
Started in Winterhude in 2007, the party at Freundlich+Kompetent was never supposed to end - unfortunately, the landlord didn't see it that way, so the operators had to look for new premises at the end of 2014. They found what they were looking for in Hamburger Straße in Barmbek-Süd. At the beginning of 2015, they celebrated a loud comeback, attracting regulars and new customers alike to the brick-adorned location in droves.
A special highlight: admission is always free
Since then, from Monday to Saturday from 6 p.m., you can listen to the musical sounds of national and international bands, artists and DJs while enjoying a cool drink in the sun chair or at the bar. Every Tuesday, long-established musicians and newcomers have the opportunity to perform their own songs at the "Open Stage".

"How Hamburg's Indra Club shaped The Beatles, Far Out Magazine
On a quiet street in Hamburg’s old red-light district sits a small club painted blood-red. It’s not so large, and if it wasn’t for the emblems of musical instruments welded into the iron gates, you wouldn’t think it a club at all. But if you look closely, you’ll see a small sign reading: “Indra — where the Beatles played first.”
Many people imagine that the Beatles hometown of Liverpool forged the Fab Four, and whilst clubs like the Cavern Club offered them a launchpad, it was nearly impossible for the group to get reliable gigs elsewhere in the city. No, it was the fair port city of Hamburg, Germany, which allowed Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, and their then-drummer Pete Best to hone their songs, style, and stagecraft. Back then, they were known as The Silver Beatles, but the group’s residency in The Indra Club was about to change everything.
They didn’t think too much about it. It was an opportunity where there had previously been none. Liverpool was a dead end, so when the owner of The Indra offered the boys a regular spot at his club, they jumped at the chance. But when they arrived in Hamburg, the reality of their situation became very clear. Of their accommodation, McCartney said: “We lived backstage in the Bambi Kino, next to the toilets, and you could always smell them. The room had been an old storeroom, and there were just concrete walls and nothing else. No heat, no wallpaper, not a lick of paint, and two sets of bunk beds, with not very much covers—Union Jack flags—we were frozen.”
They were paid 30 Deutschmarks a night for a seven-hour gig which would frequently last until the early hours of the morning. McCartney would later describe the band’s experience in Hamburg as “800 hours in the rehearsal room.” At this time (somewhat unsurprisingly), the Beatles were introduced to Amphetamines and began an exploration of drug culture, which would last until the band dissolved. McCartney would later recount his first experience of “Prellies”: “The waiters always had these pills [Preludin], so when they saw the musicians falling over with tiredness or drink, they’d give you the pill. You could work almost endlessly until the pill wore off, and then you’d have another.” McCartney would also claim that Lennon would sometimes take up to five whilst he would take only one.
