"If you want to buy instruments in Cologne, you'll most likely go to the Music Store in Kalk. But it's not just Cologne residents who buy their guitars, pianos, trumpets and drums in the four-story music giant, many people from outside the city also make the trip to Kalk - and often stay for several hours. No wonder, you can easily spend a day here, because in addition to instruments, the Music Store also has a cozy coffee bar and an inexpensive restaurant.
The Music Store has been around for almost 45 years now. Nine years ago it moved from Budengasse in the city center to Schäl Sick and since then has offered everything a musician's heart desires on even more space. The Music Store is the tenth largest music store in the world and the second largest in Europe. over 350 people work here.
If you already think the Music Store is huge as a customer, a look behind the scenes would probably take your breath away. There is even more space hidden at the back, in the semi-automated warehouse - because the Music Store also makes its living from worldwide shipping, with 500 packages being sent out here every hour.
Whether you're a professional or not - visitors to the Music Store almost automatically feel like real musicians. This is not only ensured by the guitars and awards from famous artists on the walls. The instruments can be tried out directly in the exhibition room or in separate rooms, and each floor has a different department. Lots of instruments such as pianos, guitars or drums fill the rooms, as well as equipment for sound, lighting and recording.
So many impressions can quickly make you hungry. The in-house coffee bar or restaurant can help with this. There are delicious menus for five euros and in the café everything costs one euro - from espresso and coffee to cappuccino and latte macchiato to cold drinks such as cola, Fanta or orange juice. Chocolate bars and peanuts to calm your nerves cost less than a euro. And all skeptics can be reassured: the coffee tastes good despite the low price.
If all of that isn't reason enough for you to stop by, then there are events and concerts in the Music Store every six to eight weeks. Big names like Gary Moore loved coming to the Music Store and ZZ Top also like to play here and don't just come when they're booked. Many of the musical celebrities stroll through the various departments after concerts they give in Cologne clubs or the Lanxess Arena. And so it can happen that with a bit of luck you not only drink your coffee with a view of an award, but also sit right next to the award winner.
