Abstract:
Basilica Cistern, which is one of Istanbul's most magnificent historical buildings and a symbol of East Roman Empire, is 1500 years old and has 100,000 tons of water holding capacity. The Cistern, besides being used as a museum now, hosts small concerts, poetry recitals, theatre plays and various
cultural activities.

It is fascinating to listen to music or poetry in this Basilica and for that reason, (ODEON Room Acoustics Software) Odeon Version 7.0 Room Acoustics Simulation Program have been used to assess the acoustical conditions of the Basilica.

A three dimensional model of the Basilica Cistern have been created in Rhinoceros 3.0 to be used in this study. Reverberation Time IT), Early Decay Time (EDT), Clarity (C80), Center Time (Ts), Lateral Energy Fraction (LEF),
Strength (G) and Speech Distinctness (D50) have been calculated.

Calculations have been executed for an audience crowd seated in front of the stage and for listeners placed on different parts of the tour platform. As a result, it has been found that the Basilica's analyzed room acoustics parameters are not adequate when compared to advised values. While EDT and Ts values are high, C80 is very low. Because D50 is low, speech intelligibility is low as well. Having a high Ts value drops the C80 value.

Although the Basilica has a very high volume, G value is adequate. On the other hand, LF80 value is only adequate on some receiver points.

Yerebatan Sarnıcı, also known as the Basilica Cistern, is a large underground cistern located in Istanbul, Turkey. It was built in the 6th century during the Byzantine Empire by Emperor Justinian I to provide a water filtration system for the Great Palace of Constantinople.

The Yerebatan Sarnıcı is a spiritually significant location rich in history and symbolism. It was featured in pop culture works like Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Dan Brown's Inferno. Closed in 2017 for restoration, it reopened in 2022, and we helped with the opening ceremony alongside DECOL STUDIO.
...
The cistern covers an area of 9,800 square meters and can hold up to 80,000 cubic meters of water. It is supported by 336 columns, most of which are recycled from earlier buildings and have unique carvings and designs."
