Its characters, called repentistas or cantadores, improvise verses on a wide variety of subjects, and when walking through fairs and popular spaces, they perform alone or exchange verses with another singer, the so-called challenge. The style is characteristic of the northeast region of Brazil, and is practiced especially by the inhabitants of the backlands of Paraíba and Pernambuco, more specifically in the region of Pajeú and Sertão do Moxotó (PE) and Serra do Teixeira and Cariri Ocidental (PB), where the cities of São José do Egito, Sertânia, Arcoverde (PE), Teixeira, Princesa and Monteiro (PB) are located. In this inland area, divided between the two states, practically all the important singers that the tradition has produced to date have emerged, such as Severino Pinto (Pinto do Monteiro), Lourival Batista (Louro do Pajeú), Zé Limeira, as well as the legendary Nicandro Nunes da Costa, Silvino Pirauá Lima, Francisco Romano Caluete (known as Romão do Teixeira or Romão de Mãe D'agua), Inácio da Catingueira, Agostinho Nunes da Costa and his sons Antônio Ugolino Nunes da Costa and Ugolino do Sabugi (all seven singers from the 19th century, with the last three being credited with pioneering the tradition of repente in the area in the middle of the 19th century). Another important area is the interior of Ceará, where we find Patativa do Assaré and Aderaldo Ferreira de Araújo, known as Cego Aderaldo. It is tradition to point to the aforementioned Agostinho Nunes da Costa and his sons Antônio Ugolino Nunes da Costa and Ugolino do Sabugi as the first to start the tradition of repente, although at the time, it was much simpler, being performed in only one style, the quadra, with rhymes A-B-A-B or A-B-B-A. It was with singers who emerged in the last decades of the 19th century, such as Inácio da Catingueira, that the singing would develop in more metrics, starting with the sextilha. From then on, repente would assimilate many other forms of rhymed verse and the original form of the quadra would be abandoned. Currently, singers accumulate several styles of rhymed verse, such as: sextilha (which still persists); seven lines or seven feet; post; post of seven feet; switched post; post that you fall; post turned; decima; galloping hammer; gallop by the sea; parcel; squares; exchanged squares; cabinet; toada alagoana; meia quadra; moaning; light (also taken from the practice of current singers); With the migration of many northeasterners to the city of São Paulo, singing became a tradition known throughout Brazil, based on the mass media that the capital of São Paulo has.
