Coimbra Guitar and Fado Centre - Portugal - Torre de Anto

"Located in the Torre de Anto, classified as a National Monument since 1935, the Coimbra Guitar and Fado Centre is part of the Coimbra Municipal Museum's programme and aims to contribute to the knowledge and dissemination of an artistic expression that projected the City to the world.
Singers, Instrumentalists, Composers and Guitarists format an exhibition route that follows the most important moments of Singing and Guitar in Coimbra over several generations.

Since it is a small space, the visitor will be surprised by what they can find there. First of all, some objects from the great master Carlos Paredes: two guitars (out of three that the CMC received as a donation), a small transistor radio, a mnemonic and two small amulets. There is also the lyrics of an original song by Zeca Afonso, a António Portugal's guitar and the handwritten lyrics of Trova do Vento que Passa, by Manuel Alegre, will also be on display." - https://www.cultura-acessivel.pt/evento/nucleo-da-guitarra-e-do-fado-de-coimbra/

"The Guitar and Fado Center of Coimbra, which has been operating in the Torre de Anto since July 4, 2015, was awarded the prize for Best Management and Multimedia Application by the Portuguese Association of Museology (APOM). Last March, the Coimbra City Council (CMC) submitted this museum project for the APOM awards, and the Guitar and Fado Center of Coimbra has now been awarded the prize, jointly with the Casa do Infante, in Porto. “Here is the diploma for the first prize, so congratulations to all,” said the CMC’s Councilor for Culture, Carina Gomes, at the executive meeting last Monday.

The application for this CMC museum project was submitted to two of the 26 categories that make up the awards. APOM: Best Management and Multimedia Application and Best Museography Work. Two months after the application, the Center received a top award. “We submitted the project for these awards from the Portuguese Museology Association and came first in this one for Best Management and Multimedia Application, tied with Casa do Infante, in Porto”, said Carina Gomes, at the council meeting on June 6th.

A distinction that makes the president of the CMC, Manuel Machado, proud. “Congratulations to the entire team that worked on this project and an additional recommendation: digitize it and send it to all those who, within the walls, criticized so much the alleged lack of quality of the center. After all, we won a first prize”, highlighted the president of the CMC.

APOM is an association with over 50 years of existence (1965 – 2016), which annually awards prizes in 26 different categories, with the aim of valuing the best management and good museological practices, distinguishing the work carried out in museums and the merit of their professionals, in different areas of museology. This year, 150 applications were submitted for the 26 categories. The prize for the Núcleo da Guitarra e do Fado de Coimbra was presented by the president of the APOM jury, João Neto, on June 3rd, in a ceremony that took place at the Museu do Dinheiro, in Lisbon.

It is worth remembering that the project of the Núcleo da Guitarra e do Fado de Coimbra, installed in the Torre de Anto, offers a chronological journey that follows the most important moments of Singing and Guitar in Coimbra over several generations, documented through narratives that are complemented by archive images and contemporary perspectives, material collections and phonographic recordings, providing content in various formats and creating attractions that promote knowledge and appreciation for this very peculiar tradition of Coimbra.
