"Cidade do Samba is a cultural hub and theme park about Carnival and Samba, with outdoor areas and covered buildings, located in an area of Gamboa that in days gone by was part of the port of Rio de Janeiro. exhibitions about carnival, costumes, floats and shows by samba schools can be seen.It was inaugurated in 2005 and in 2024 it will be completing almost 20 years.
Cidade do Samba is included in the revitalization project of the old port area of Rio de Janeiro
All over the world, there is a tendency to revitalize the old port areas that over the years and economic changes and urban transformations have emptied.
As there was a need to choose a place to build such a complex of oak woods, the area fit like a glove. But not only because of this fact. The place where it is installed is in the Gamboa neighborhood, an area of former occupation, and also a place strongly linked to the birth of samba.
Theme Park and Cultural Production Pole
Cidade do Samba is a recent tourist attraction in Rio de Janeiro. It is a thematic city, built in the port district by the City Hall, occupying an area of 114,000 square meters at Rua Rivadáva Corrêa 60, Gamboa district.
The objective of the Thematic City is to transform the activities of the Samba Schools into a permanent practice. It is not only a tourist attraction, but also a place for constant art production.

We can see that the complex is large, formed by numerous sheds arranged around an uncovered area, where there are also attractions under tents and stalls. The covered areas are large, where numerous activities, concerts and events take place.
The City's design consists of geometric shapes with the workshops surrounding a main square.
The Samba Workshops
Giant gates measuring 10 meters wide and 7.5 meters high allow the passage of fully assembled floats.
On the highest floor with 2,700m², there are the style rooms, sewing workshops, rooms for creating ornaments, a place for lectures and a practical class (workshop) on modeling in polystyrene and fiberglass.
A freight elevator serves all floors.
Ceiling with 12 meters of span allow the floats to be assembled in full size.
Visitors can walk and see the factories/workshops through an appropriate path and see "in loco" the carnival production, through a counter 8 meters high.
Visitation, Shows and Cultural Production All Year Round
Throughout the year, it is possible to take samba (dance) classes and watch shows and carnival and drum shows, and depending on the schedule with dancers and flag bearers. Shows with dance and choreography can be organized giving a taste of the big party, composed of bright colors and exotic and dazzling costumes.
Venue also for Events
Interestingly, the city of samba was thought and planned also as a place with infrastructure to host events, fairs, exhibitions and seminars for companies. The organization of Cidade do Samba even offers event organizers an option to include one of the shows regularly offered to conventional visitors to culminate or be the "grand finale" of events and seminars. It is certainly a genuine and interesting idea, which closes a congress, event or seminar with a golden key and originality.
How to get to or go to Cidade do Samba
Cidade do Samba is located at Rua Rivadáva Corrêa n. 60, Gamboa neighborhood, Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro, in front of the British Cemetery.
The place has parking, and the entrance is on Av. Rodrigues Alvez, which is right in front of Armazem 11 at Cais do Porto. There is daily visitation and some shows that can be seen by appointment or reservations." -
