"The first friars of the Franciscan Order arrived in Rio in 1592 and established their first residence at the foot of the now-extinct Morro do Castelo (Castle Hill), until they received a donation of land on Morro de Santo Antônio (Saint Anthony's Hill) (so named because there was a small chapel dedicated to the Saint there) where they built the Convent.
The cornerstone was laid on June 4, 1608, and the first mass was celebrated in 1615. In the 1750s, major renovations were made to expand its capacity, and the convent took on its current configuration.
Several friars from the Convent were prominent figures. Friar Vicente do Salvador, for example, authored the first document in Brazilian historiography, *História do Brasil* (1627).
The manuscript was found by Capistrano de Abreu in the National Library in 1881, two and a half centuries after it was written and published in 1888. Friar Sampaio authored the *Manifesto do Rio de Janeiro*, a text that requested Dom Pedro's continued stay in Brazil and was delivered to the prince on January 9, 1822, the date Dom Pedro famously declared "I'm staying." The friar was also a political mentor to Dom Pedro I, and it is said that several discussions in favor of independence took place in his cell.
- https://riomemorias.com.br/memoria/convento-de-santo-antonio/
